In de jaren ’60 werd het opgehoogd voor de bouw van deze kerncentrale. Als compensatie voor het verlies van een brak schor bij de aanleg van het Deurganckdok werd het herstel van dit gedeelte van het Paardenschor voorgesteld. Het gebied werd afgegraven tot op de hoogte van het voorliggende slik. Aansluitend op de bestaande dijk werd een nieuwe Sigmadijk aangelegd, terwijl de oude werd afgegraven. De inrichtingswerken werden beëindigd in april 2004. Omdat de voorliggende strook van het Schor van Ouden Doel gespaard bleef is de opening naar het estuarium beperkt en heeft het gebied de kenmerken van een ontpoldering door dijkdoorbraak. Bij de oplevering van de werken was het volledige gebied een onbegroeid slik van 12ha. \r\n\r\nNaar analogie met andere natuurontwikkelingsgebieden langs de Zeeschelde werd een monitoringsplan opgesteld en uitgevoerd. De bemonsteringspunten zijn gesitueerd langs 4 raaien of transecten, verspreid over het hele gebied. Langs deze raaien zijn in totaal 13 permanente kwadraten (PQ’s) afgebakend om de vegetatieveranderingen op te volgen. Hiervoor worden jaarlijks vegetatieopnames (Londoschaal) van deze PQ’s gemaakt. Daaraan gekoppeld wordt ieder jaar de absolute hoogte (m TAW) van de PQ’s ingemeten met behulp van RTK-GPS en theodoliet zodat de overstromingsfrequentie kan bepaald worden. Aanvullend wordt eveneens jaarlijks een gebiedsdekkende vegetatiekaart gemaakt om de ruimtelijke spreiding van de vegetatie en de kolonisatie weer te geven. \r\n\r\nLangs de centrale raai zijn er vijf vaste staalnamelocaties waar sederoplots zijn geplaatst om de sedimentatie of erosie op te meten en waar macrobenthos- en sedimentstalen worden genomen en waarlangs op geregelde tijdstippen profielen worden opgemeten. Sedimentstalen worden geanalyseerd ter bepaling van de granulometrie, en organisch stofgehalte. Jaarlijks worden op een selectie van de stalen de concentraties aan vervuilende stoffen bepaald. Locaties DO1, DO2 en DO3 liggen in het projectgebied, locaties DO4 en DO5 liggen op het oorspronkelijke slik voor het
