The MOCNESS-1 unit has a net mouth opening of one square meter at a 45  degree tow angle, net size of 335 microns, and the ability to sample  at nine different depth intervals over the duration of the tow.  Biomass (wet weight) and abundance were determined for each depth  interval sampled principally by the technique of silhouette  digitization (Little. W.S., Copley, N.J. 2003. WHOI Silhouette  Digitizer version 1.0 User's Guide. Woods Hole Oceanographic  Institution Technical Report #2003-05, 63 pp).
