Sediment samples were taken with a Van Veen grab, while water was sampled with a Niskin or Go Flo bottle.
\r\n- the pollutant mix absorbed from the water by passive samplers which were deployed at the three coastal harbours, for at least six weeks. Passive samplers are a powerful tool in measuring the concentrations of hydrophobic organic compounds, due to their high affinity for these substances. Hydrophobic contaminants are often difficult to detect using conventional sampling techniques because of their low water solubility. The uptake of organic compounds by the passive samplers is driven by a diffusive process. Back calculation to the water phase is possible using uptake kinetics and equilibrium constants.
