Duurzaambeheer van de Noordzee echter veronderstelt een nauwkeurige beschrijving van de toestand van dit ecosysteem. Voor de Belgische kust bevinden zich een aantal zandbanken die karakteristiek zijn voor het zuidelijke deel van de Noordzee. In deze scriptie is een studie gebeurd van drie verschillende zandbanken in twee seizoenen. De hyperbenthosgemeenschappen zijn in detail beschreven en in relatie gebracht met het fysisch biotisch milieu om zo een precies beeld te krijgen van de habitats en de biota van de zandbanken.","OrigDescr":"De staalnamecampagnes hadden plaats op een Hinderbank (de Oosthinder), een Vlaamse Bank (de Kwintebank) en een Zeelandbank (de Thorntonbank). Er werden telkens zes stations bemonsterd per bank, een keer in het voorjaar en een keer in het najaar. De staalname gebeurde met een hyperbenthische slee en telkens werden een aantal omgevingsvariabelen gemeten. Een opmerking in de verdere vergelijking van de stalen is dat de Oosthinder en de Kwintebank in 1997 bemonsterd werden terwijl de stalen van de Thorntonbank uit 1998 dateren. De densiteit (N\/100 m\u00b3) en het aantal soorten zijn in het najaar veel hoger dan in het voorjaar. Dit patroon is gerelateerd aan verschillende omgevingsvariabelen, waarvan de temperatuur de belangrijkste is. Deze is een belangrijke factor, mede verantwoordelijk voor het seizoenaal voorkomen van verschillende soorten. In het voorjaar is de densiteit het hoogst op de Oosthinder (550 ind.\/100 m\u00b3), die het verst in zee is gelegen, terwijl deze in het najaar op de Kwintebank geconcentreerd is (7550 ind.\/100 m\u00b3). Deze bank ligt het meest kustwaarts. Via verschillende analyses zijn er op temporeel vlak twee verschillend gemeenschappen te onderscheiden: er is een voorjaars- en een najaarsgemeenschap. Binnen elke gemeenschap is er een ruimtelijk onderscheid tussen de bemonsterde banken: een Oosthinder-, een Kwinte- en een Thorntongemeenschap. Er zijn dus zes verschillende gemeenschappen gekarakteriseerd. Mysidacea domineren alle gemeenschappen, behalve deze waar een groot percentage aan Cnidaria overheerst. Doch dit gaat waarschijnlijk om toevallige vangsten. De belangrijkste hyperbenthische soorten zijn vrij verschillend voor de verschillende gemeenschappen. In het voorjaar is er een duidelijk patroon, waarbij Schistomysis spiritus domineert op de Oosthinder en chistomysis kervillei op de Kwintebank. De Thorntonbank vertoont een intermediaire samenstelling doch een grotere rijkdom aan belangrijke soorten. In het najaar is de trend niet zo uitgesproken omdat de temperaturen hoger liggen. De Mysidacea Schistomysis spiritus en Schistomysis kervillei komen dichter bij de kust voor, nl. Op de Kwinte- en de Thorntonbank. De Oosthinder wordt gedomineerd door Cnidaria, vnl. Mitrocomella species. In tegenstelling tot de voorjaarsgemeenschappen is hier de Kwintebank het meest divers. Bij de staalname dienen een aantal tekortkomingen in rekening worden gebracht. De hyperbenthische slee bemonstert' het hyperbenthos niet optimaal en de eigenlijke staalname is niet volledig gebeurd. Ook de beschouwde definitie van hyperbenthos zorgt voor problemen aangezien deze andere soorten elimineert als niet-hyperbenthos. Algemeen is er een sterk seizoenseffect voor de densiteit terwijl dit minder duidelijk is voor de biomassa. Dit is te wijten aan de vangst van vissen, die veel hoger is in het najaar. Deze komen procentueel voor in een vrij lage densiteit, doch hebben een hoge biomassa. Voor de zes gemeenschappen bJijkt dat de seizoenale verschillen groter zijn dan de ruimtelijke verschillen. In het voorjaar heeft de Oosthindergemeenschap, die het verst uit de kust ligt, de hoogste densiteiten en in het najaar zijn deze waarden het hoogst op de Kwintebank. Deze bank is het meest kustwaarts gelegen.
