De vergaarde biologische en ecologische kennis over dit ecosysteem blijft echter dikwijls verborgen in wetenschappelijke literatuur die weinig toegankelijk is. Daarom werd het BCP opgedeeld in drie belangrijke zones om zo de data op een duidelijke wijze te synthetiseren. Men onderscheidt een kustzone, een open-zee zone en tussen beide een transitiezone. Zowel voor het meio- als het macrobenthos werden ruimtelijke gradienten in densiteit, biomassa en diversiteit ter hoogte van deze drie zones vastgesteld. Zo bleek zowel de densiteit als de biomassa voor beide fauna's te stijgen naar de kust toe en waren ze ter hoogte van het kustgebied hoger in het westen dan in het oosten. De biodiversiteit steeg naar het open-zee gebied toe en het westelijke kustgebied telde een hoger aantal soorten dan het oostelijke. Het doel van deze scriptie is deze gradienten te toetsen voor het epibenthos en het hyperbentos en na te gaan of deze zowel in 1997 als in 1998 kunnen bevestigd worden. Ook de keuze van de stations, die in deze optiek werden gekozen, dient geevalueerd te worden. Dit eindwerk kadert in een biomonitoringsprogramma, dat als doel heeft om over een langere tijdspanne trends in ruimte en tijd vast te stellen van de bestudeerde organismen en dientengevolge maatregelen te nemen om het ecosysteem in kwestie, in dit geval het BCP, te beschermen. Met andere woorden, op die manier wordt getracht een bijdrage te leveren tot het programma 'Duurzaam Beheer van de Noordzee', het overkoepelende programma waarin dit eindwerk kadert. Voor het epibenthos werden zowel in het najaar van 1997 als 1998 een aantal kuststations bemonsterd op het Belgisch Continentaal Plat. Deze waren de stations 115, 120, 790, 140, 701 en 702. Verder werden ook stalen genomen ter hoogte van een meer 'offshore' gelegen station aan de oostkust, namelijk station 780. Voor het hyperbenthos werden de kuststations 115, 790 en 702 bemonsterd. Verder vertegenwoordigt station 630 het open-zee gebied en station 330 is in de transitiezone tussen kust en open-zee gelegen. Alle hyperbenthosstations werden bemonsterd zowel in het najaar van 1997 als 1998. Voor het epibenthos zijn de ruimtelijke gradienten voor wat betreft de densiteit niet echt toepasselijk. De densiteit is namelijk het hoogst zowel in 1997 als in 1998 ter hoogte van station 780 (resp. 49.67 en 74.81 N\/100m\u00b2), dat 'offshore' is gelegen. Hierbij moet echter wel direct worden bijvermeld dat dit station niet echt als een 'offshore' station kan beschouwd worden, zoals wel het geval is voor bijvoorbeeld de stations 330 en 630, die duidelijk verder van de kust gelegen zijn. De ruimtelijke trends inzake biomassa en diversiteit voor het meio- en het macrobenthos kunnen toegepast worden op het epibenthos voor beide jaren. Over het algemeen kunnen we dus stellen dat zowel in 1997 als in 1998 de ruimtelijke patronen voor het epibenthos bevestigd worden. Voor het hyperbenthos zijn, zowel in 1997 als in 1998, de verschillende ruimtelijke gradienten van densiteit, biomassa en diversiteit duidelijker dan voor het epibenthos. De hoge densiteit en biomassa aan de kust worden voornamelijk veroorzaakt door station 790. Het vooropgestelde diversiteitspatroon voor meio- en macrobenthos is mooi aan te tonen. Feit is wel dat station 330 het hoogst aantal hyperbenthische soorten vertoont, zowel in 1997 als in 1998 (resp. 40 en 41 soorten) in plaats van het verwachte station 630 (in 1997 ontbreekt het staal; 35 soorten in 1998), dat verder in zee gelegen is. Dit zou echter verklaard kunnen worden door het feit dat station 330 in de transitiezone tussen kust en open-zee gebied gelegen is en juist daarom ook nog een aantal soorten van zowel kust als open-zee zou kunnen bevatten, naast de soorten kenmerkend voor het station zelf. De verspreidingspatronen van de meest abundante soorten voldoen in beide jaren aan de verwachtingen en dit zowel voor het epi- als het hyperbenthos.
