At each centre station (X), four stations (A to D) were selected by moving approximately 4 km in a NW, NE, SW and SE direction. Four further stations (E to H) were chosen at a distance of approximately 11 km away from the centre station in the same directions (except Carmarthen Bay station E). At each of the 9 stations, 4 replicate sediment samples were collected from within a 100 m range ring (DGPS position fixing) by means of a 0.1 m2 day grab. From each sample, two sub-samples were collected with a perspex corer (3.6 cm diameter, 10 cm2 surface area) to a depth of 5 cm, one for the analysis of a suite of environmental variables and one for the study of nematodes.
