Dit geeft een indicatie dat de ontwikkeling zeer waarschijnlijk het gevolg is van de verruiming en het gevoerde bagger-, stort- en zandwinbeleid.\r\n\r\nIn het westen van de Westerschelde is het areaal ondiepwater over de periode 1986-2005 min of meer gelijk gebleven op een niveau van 1650 ha. Alleen het jaar 2005 lijkt hier vanaf te wijken. De komende jaren zal moeten blijken of er sprake is van een verandering in de ontwikkeling of van een fluctuatie in het ondiepwaterareaal.\r\nZowel de ontwikkeling in het ondiepwaterareaal als het geulareaal komen overeen met de trend. Het geulareaal in het westen neemt toe met circa 7 ha per jaar. Het plaatareaal in het westen laat sinds 1996 een extra afname zien boven op de dalende trend. Vanaf 2001 is er zelfs sprake van een significante afname van het plaatareaal. Dit betekent in 2005 een significante extra afname van circa 130 ha (6%) ten opzichte van de trend in 2005.\r\n\r\nHet midden van de Westerschelde laat vooral veranderingen in het ondiepwater- en plaatareaal zien. Het ondiepwaterareaal is na 1996 min of meer constant gebleven op 500 ha. Dit betekent een onderbreking van de dalende trend. Vanaf het jaar 2000 leidt dit tot een significante afwijking ten opzichte van deze dalende trend. In 2005 is het ondiepwaterareaal circa 20 procent (110 ha) significant meer dan op basis van de trend verwacht kon worden.\r\nHet plaatareaal in het midden blijft na 1996 ook min of meer constant en dit betekent een onderbreking van de stijgende trend. Als gevolg van deze ontwikkeling is het plaatareaal min of meer gelijk gebleven aan 1300 ha. Vanaf 1997 is er sprake van een significante afname van het plaatareaal ten opzichte van de stijgende trend. Dit betekent dat er in 2005 circa 13,5 procent (200 ha) minder plaatareaal is dan op basis van de trend verwacht kon worden.\r\nHet geulareaal in het midden neemt toe met circa 8 ha per jaar. Hiermee komt de ontwikkeling van het geulareaal overeen met de trend.\r\n\r\nHet ondiepwaterareaal is na 1996 gelijk gebleven op een niveau van circa 800 ha. Dit is een verandering ten opzichte van de dalende trend. Vanaf het jaar 2000 is er sprake van significant meer ondiepwaterareaal ten opzichte van de trend. Hierdoor is er in 2005 circa 22 procent meer (145 ha) ondiepwaterareaal in het oosten dan op basis van de dalende trend verwacht kon worden. De tienjarige trend van het plaatareaal in het oosten komt overeen met de periode 1980-2005. Van 1950 tot en met 1980 was er sprake van een stijging van het plaatareaal. De tienjarige trend komt hierdoor niet volledig overeen met de langjarige trend van 50 jaar. Gezien de goede overeenkomst van de tienjarige trend met de periode vanaf 1980 is de ontwikkeling beschreven ten opzichte van deze tienjarige trend in plaats van de langjarige trend.\r\nHet plaatareaal daalt in de periode 1996-2005 licht en komt daarmee overeen met de tienjarige trend.\r\nHet geulareaal in het oosten neemt toe. De toename van het geulareaal is echter minder sterk dan op basis van de tienjarige trend verwacht zou worden. Wordt dit echter afgezet tegen de langjarige trend dan is er juist sprake van een sterkere toename.
