The migration of eels in their juvenile stage (glass eels) was studied, and options to improve eel passage at a tidal barrier complex at the mouth of the Yser River, Flanders, Belgium, were assessed. Glass eels were sampled during tidal rise with stow nets and lift nets to analyse their distribution over the study area, while a fyke net was used to evaluate the impact of limited barrier opening on glass eel migration. Support-vector machine-based analysis of the lift net data indicated that migrating glass eels are attracted by the fresh water flow leaking from the barriers, whereas other variables such as the sampling location only had a weak  influence on the glass eel density. Limited barrier opening during tidal rise appeared to be a cost-efficient and effective mitigation option to improve upstream glass eel migration without significant intrusion of seawater. Adjusted barrier management could often be implemented and applied on numerous tidal barriers. De beperking van de stroomopwaartse migratie van glasaal wordt nu algemeen beschouwd als één van de kritische factoren die de aalpopulaties in gevaar brengt. Eén van de belangrijkste intrekroutes voor glasaal in Vlaanderen betreft de IJzermonding. Daarom analyseert dit rapport glasaalmigratie en worden mogelijke mitigerende alternatieven geëvalueerd ter hoogte van de spuiconstructies in de Ganzepoot (IJzermonding) in Vlaanderen, België. Glasaal werd gevangen tijdens opkomend tij met sleep- en kruisnetten om hun verspreidingn over het studiegebied na te gaan, terwijl een fuik werd gebruikt om de invloed van beperkte spui-opening tijdens opkomend tij op glasaalmigratie na te gaan. Migrerende glasalen bereikten de spuien vermoedelijk tijdens een vorige tijcyclus, en er werd een densiteitspiek waargenomen in de tijstroom gedurende het laatste uur voor hoogtij. Support-vector machine analyse van de kruisnetdata toonde aan dat migrerende glasaal aangetrokken wordt door de zoetwaterstroom die lekt door de spuien, terwijl andere variabelen zoals de bemonsteringslocatie slechts een beperkt effect hadden op de glasaaldensiteit. Een artificiële lokstroom leidde niet tot significante veranderingen in de glasaaldensiteiten. Beperkte spui-opening gedurende het opkomend tij bleek een kostenefficiënte en effectieve mitigerende maatregel te zijn om stroomopwaartse glasaalmigratie te verbeteren, zonder significante instroom van zeewater.
