Deze drie waterlopen werden elektrisch bevist om het succes van de herintroducties van rivierdonderpad op die plaatsen te evalueren en op te volgen in het kader van een ex-situ conservatieprogramma van een bedreigde, genetisch unieke rivierdonderpadpopulatie uit het Demerbekken. Vanaf 2011 hebben we op alle bemonsterde afvistrajecten ook de waterkwaliteit (pH, zuurstofgehalte, conductiviteit, temperatuur) gemeten en werd, indien mogelijk, elke gevangen rivierdonderpad individueel gewogen (0,1g).   \r\n<i>Achtergrond project</i>:\nIn België komen er van nature twee rivierdonderpadsoorten voor: <i>Cottus perifretum</i> in het stroomgebied van de Schelde en Cottus rhenanus in het stroomgebied van de Maas. Vroeger kwam de rivierdonderpad sensu lato frequent voor in de Vlaamse bovenlopen. Tegenwoordig is hij zeldzaam in de Vlaamse waterlopen (Rode Lijst status: kwetsbaar) en volledig beschermd door de visserijwetgeving. In ongeveer heel West-Europa wordt de rivierdonderpad als sterk bedreigd beschouwd en is hij opgenomen in Bijlage II van de Europese Habitatrichtlijn (92/43/EEC).\nGenetisch onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat de genetische diversiteit voor Cottus perifretum in Vlaanderen laag en sterk gefragmenteerd is tussen de verschillende resterende populaties. Elke populatie kan dan ook als een aparte beheerseenheid (BE) beschouwd worden. Om verder verlies aan genetische variabiliteit tegen te gaan, dienen maatregelen genomen te worden om alle, of toch zoveel mogelijk, Cottus perifretum populaties maximaal te beschermen.\nTot 2003 dacht men dat de rivierdonderpad (Cottus perifretum) uitgestorven was in het Vlaamse deel van het Demerbekken. In dat jaar kwam het bestaan van een relictpopulatie in de Dorpbronbeek, een klein zijbeekje van de Kleine Gete, aan het licht. Deze populatie is verwant met de andere populaties binnen het Scheldebekken maar heeft maar liefst vijf private allelen (Horemans, 2006). Dergelijke genetisch unieke populaties hebben een hoge prioriteit om beschermd te worden. De toestand van de populatie is echter zorgwekkend omwille van recente degradatie van het nu al zo kleine habitat. Omdat de in-situ bescherming van de populatie moeilijk en onvoldoende bleek, sloegen INBO en ANB de handen in elkaar om een ex-situ conservatieprogramma op te starten waarbij gekweekte nakomelingen van deze relictpopulatie en nadien ook van een andere rivierdonderpopulatie uit het Demerbekken geherintroduceerd werden op verschillende geschikte plaatsen binnen het bekken.
