The fish collection is currently maintained at Universidad de Antofagasta in northern Chile. \r\n\r\nThe region where the fishes were collected is an important fishery area, mostly based on small pelagic fishes, such as anchovy and sardines. However, fishes inhabiting the mesopelagic layer are seldom referred to, because they are not part of the fishery landings. This data set includes those fishes from deep water (>200 m) from this highly productive upwelling zone and some species normally found upon the El Niño conditions. \r\n\r\nAdditional Information: The notes column includes the following fields from the original dataset ordered from left to right: typeofcollectingevent, collectingevent, station, and dayornight. These fields are defined as follows. Typeofcollectingevent: specifies sampling gear. Collectingevent: the name of the oceanographic cruise. Station: refers to the sampling station whose code depends on the cruise.
