During construction of the Liefkenshoek tunnel in the late eighties, the excavated soil was dumped between the summer dike and the dike of the marsh. The area was restored in 2002 as compensation for the construction of the North Sea container terminal on an intertidal mud flat in 1994-1995. The rubble of the summer dike and the dumped material were removed, the area was leveled with a weak slope just below mean high water level creating the starting conditions for new intertidal mudflats and marshes. \r\n\r\nThe developments of this new intertidal area are monitored in cooperation with the University of Antwerp (UA) and the Administration of waterways and maritime affairs (AWZ). Sedimentation, erosion, the formation of channels and the creek system, benthic settlement, vegetation, water birds and breeding birds are observed. Six transects with sedimentation-erosion plots and piëzometers were placed perpendicular to the shoreline. Monitoring mainly takes place along these transects. Every fortnight sedimentation/erosion is measured and the top-layer of the sediment is analyzed for sediment composition, organic matter and chlorophyll-a content. \r\n\r\nThe benthic settlement is monitored monthly and vegetation development is measured by means of permanent quadrates once during growing season. The University of Antwerp examines in detail the settlement and senescence of the vegetation using digital photography. Aerial photography and topographical surveying will complete this monitoring with data on geomorphological developments and vegetation settlement. In conclusion the use of the area by water birds and breeding birds is monitored.","OrigAbstract":"Deze dataset omvat de gegevens verzameld sedert de oplevering van de werken en omvat data over morfologie, sediment, macrobenthos, vegetatie, broedvogels en watervogels op Ketenissepolder, een brakwater intergetijdengebied op de linker Schelde oever.","OrigDescr":"De Ketenissepolder is een voormalig brak schor van ca 30 ha tussen het fort van Liefkenshoek en de Kallo sluis (Linker Scheldeoever). Destijds werd hier de specie die vrijkwam bij de aanleg van de Liefkenshoektunnel opgespoten tussen zomerdijk en een waterkerende dijk. Als compensatie voor de aanleg van de Noordzee containerterminal wordt dit slik- en schorgebied hersteld. Het steenslag van de zomerdijk en de opgespoten specie werden weer verwijderd en het gebied werd afgegraven tot net onder GHW met een zeer zwakke helling naar de rivier toe. Op die manier ontstaat er een goede uitgangssituatie voor de ontwikkeling van nieuw slik en schor waar zich geulen, platen, zilte riet- en graslandvegetaties kunnen vormen. \r\n\r\nDe ontwikkelingen in dit herstelproject worden door het Instituut voor Natuur- en Bosonderzoek gemonitored in samenwerking met de Universiteit van Antwerpen (UA) en de Waterwegen en Zeekanaal nv (W&Z). Sedimentatie- en erosieprocessen, de vorming van geulen, de vestiging van bodemdieren en vegetatie en het gebruik van het gebied door watervogels en broedvogels worden opgevolgd. \r\n\r\nAangezien estuariene herstelprojecten het snelst evolueren onmiddellijk na herstel van het getijdenregime werd in elk deelgebied met monitoring gestart naargelang de werken vorderden. De eerste meetraai werd opgesteld in juni 2002, terwijl de werken pas eindigden in januari 2003. In totaal bestaan er 6 raaien, gaande van de dijk tot aan de laagwaterlijn waarlangs in totaal 20 sedimentatie-erosieplots staan opgesteld. Alle monitoring inzake sedimentatie/erosie, sedimentsamenstelling, macrobenthos en deels ook morfologie, gebeurt in transecten rond deze dwarsraaien. Voor de opvolging van de vegetatie werden PQ’s afgebakend en de watervogels worden binnen grotere transecten geteld.\r\n\r\nIn het eerste jaar na afgraving werden de sedimentatie-erosie tweewekelijks opgemeten, later nam deze frequentie geleidelijk af, en worden ze anno 2007 nog halfjaarlijks opgemeten. Bij elke sederoplot worden sedimentstalen verzameld waarvan sedimentsamenstelling, organische stof en chlorofyl a-gehalte bepaald worden. Jaarlijks worden ook een aantal van deze stalen geanalyseerd op verontreinigende stoffen zoals PCB’s, zware metalen, PAK’s en pesticiden. Gedurende het eerste jaar werd maandelijks wordt het macrobenthos bemonsterd om de vestiging van bodemdieren te evalueren. Vanaf het tweede jaar neemt de frequentie af en werden bodemdieren nog seizoenaal bemonsterd. De vegetatievestiging wordt gevolgd aan de hand van 38 aantal permanente kwadraten. Luchtfotografie en topografische opnamen (RTK-GPS, niveaumeter) leveren een meer globaal beeld van de vegetatievestiging, de vorming van geulen en andere morfologische kenmerken. Tenslotte wordt ook het gebruik van het gebied door watervogels en broedvogels opgevolgd door de watervogels per transect te tellen, dit gebeurt maandelijks, en de broedvogels in het broedseizoen te
