The area is protected under the Ramsar convention, the EU Birds Directive, several national and regional laws and decrees and it is also proposed to be part of the Natura 2000 network under the Habitats Directive. However, due to the ever-increasing demands for the international container traffic all these measures could not prevent the construction of a container terminal south of the area in 1994, at the cost of 8ha of intertidal mudflat.\r\n\r\nSince 1990 macrobenthos was sampled yearly during fall on 24 locations, in the period 1993-1994 two of these (L and R) were sampled monthly. Sediment was sampled simultaneously to collect data on particle size and pollution. Sedimentation and erosion was measured in four sediment-erosion plots since 1993. Vegetation maps of the tidal marsh were made in 1992 and in 1996. Water birds were monitored monthly form boats at low tide by the Institute of Nature Conservation and from land by Natuurpunt, al local NGO. The first records date from 1981. This dataset only includes the data for the period 1989-2002. The monitoring project operated in coorperation with AWZ (Waterways and Maritime Affairs Administration).","OrigAbstract":"Deze dataset omvat de gegevens verzameld tijdens een meer dan 10 jaar durende monitoring van macrobenthos, sediment, vegetatie en watervogels in het Groot Buitenschoor, een brakwater intergetijdengebied op de rechter Schelde oever.","OrigDescr":"Het Groot Buitenschoor is een brakwater intergetijdengebied dat zich situeert op de rechter Schelde oever, nabij de Belgisch-Nederlandse grens. Met erkenningen o.a. als natuurresrevaat, Europees Vogel-en Habitatrichtlijngebied en Ramsargebied geniet het gebied nationale en internationale bescherming. Toch werd in 1994 overgegaan tot de bouw van de Noordzee containerterminal net ten zuiden van het Groot Buitenschoor. Door deze ingreep verdween 8ha slik.\r\n\r\nDoor het Instituut voor natuurbehoud (IN) werd sedert 1990 het macrobenthos op het Groot Buitenschoor gevolgd. Jaarlijks werden in het najaar 24 locaties bemonsterd, bij twee daarvan (L en R) gebeurde dit in de periode 1993-1994 ook maandelijks. Per locatie werden daarnaast ook gegevens verzameld met betrekking tot de sedimentsamenstelling en voor een aantal jaren werden ook enkele fysico-chemische eigenschappen (micro-verontreinigingen) van het sediment bepaald. Sedimentatie -erosieprocessen werden opgemeten aan de hand van 'sedimentatie-erosieplots' op vier locaties sinds 1993. De vegetatie van het schor werd in 1992 en in 1996 gekarteerd. De watervogels werden zowel van op de Schelde (IN) als van op het land (Natuurpunt) geteld. De eerste gegevens dateren van 1981. Deze dataset omvat enkel de periode 1989-2002.
