De methode om gegevens te verzamelen varieert nogal per groep. Broedvogels en zoogdieren worden geteld (vanaf de wal, vanuit boten en vliegtuigen) evenals amfibie\u00ebn. Vissen worden gevangen (speciaal of als bijvangst), geteld, gemeten en gedetermineerd, afhankelijk van de benodigde gegevens. Vegetatie wordt in kaart gebracht, bodemfauna en plankton worden bemonsterd en geanalyseerd. De hele voedselketen komt zo, verdeeld over een aantal groepen, aan bod.\r\n\r\nMet het biologisch meetnet worden veranderingen in het ecosysteem gesignaleerd en beleidsdoelen getoetst. Het ecologisch functioneren van een watersysteem kan dankzij het meetnet in verband worden gebracht met de gebruiksfuncties die het heeft.
