Sólo tres especies de tortugas marinas (golfina, negra y laúd) llegan anidar a las playas de la península de Baja California. La tortuga golfina es la especie con mayor abundancia de nidos.","OrigDescr":"Con el apoyo de la Alianza WWF-Telcel se ha permitido consolidar los programas de conservación de tortugas marinas en el estado de Baja California Sur a través de la investigación y actividades de rastreo satelital, educación ambiental, capacitación de expertos, protección de sitios de anidación y el fortalecimiento de un Centro de Protección e Investigación de la Tortuga Marina, del Municipio de Los Cabos. \r\n<p>\r\n“Gracias al trabajo conjunto de la Alianza, el gobierno local, la Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP), grupos tortugueros y el sector hotelero el Programa para la Protección de Tortugas Marinas desarrolló el proyecto ‘tras la ruta de la tortuga golfina’, que ha logrado el seguimiento satelital de ocho tortugas marinas -Renata, Abby, Esperanza, Marisol, Terramar, Camila, Raquel y Azteca-”, explicó Graciela Tiburcio,asesora de la Dirección municipal de educación, divulgación y difusión ambiental del Gobierno de Los Cabos. La Alianza ha participado también en el marcaje satelital de cuatro tortugas prietas y dos tortugas carey con otras asociaciones. \r\n<p>\r\nLos datos obtenidos por 5 años proveen información sobre lugares de estancia, distancias y posibles rutas migratorias. Ello contribuye a estimar los grupos de la población reproductiva, compararlos con otras poblaciones del mundo y tomar decisiones sobre su manejo y conservación. Por ejemplo, demostró que, contrario a lo que se creía, las tortugas golfinas no se alejan del territorio mexicano y, dependiendo de la disponibilidad de alimento, pueden incluso permanecer frente a las costas realizando movimientos entre Sinaloa, Jalisco y Nayarit. \r\n<p>\r\n“El seguimiento satelital es una herramienta invaluable de educación ambiental. Con base en él, se diseñó un proyecto para escuelas primarias con actividades vinculadas a español, matemáticas, historia y ciencias sociales y habilidades científicas, correlacionadas con los programas de estudio de la Secretaría de Educación Pública, en el que se rastrea a las tortugas por internet o mediante una experiencia posterior.
