RIKZ coördineert de monitoringprogramma’s in de zoute en brakke wateren. Visziekten en gehalten van chemische verontreinigingen in vissen en mosselen worden als indicatoren voor de kwaliteit van de rijkswateren beschouwd. \r\nDe databestanden en producten uit deze monitoring vormen een onderdeel van de Nederlandse inbreng in het internationale meetprogramma ‘Joint Assessment and Monitoring Programma’ (JAMP). Dit programma is tot stand gekomen via de Oslo-Parijs Conventie (OSPAR) waaraan landen deelnemen die grenzen aan de Noordzee, plus IJsland, Ierland, Portugal en Spanje.\r\n\r\nIn de Westerschelde vinden van de genoemde metingen alleen chemische analyses van vissen en mosselen plaats (projectleider RIKZ: Victor Langenberg). De bemonstering van vissen en mosselen voor de chemische analyses in de Westerschelde wordt in opdracht van DG Water door het RIKZ en het Nederlands Instituut voor Visserijonderzoek uitgevoerd. \r\nDe bemonstering van vissen vindt plaats in het middengebied van de Westerschelde, gedefinieerd als de zone tussen de plaat Hooge Springer en de Biezelingse Ham. In dit gebied is het de bedoeling dat er 80 mannelijke botten (uitwendig als gezond te beoordelen) gevangen worden, met een bepaalde verdeling tussen de lengtes 20 en 35 cm. Deze botten worden door het Nederlands Instituut voor Visserij Onderzoek te IJmuiden nader geanalyseerd: bepaling van vocht- en kwikgehalte in spierweefsel, bepaling van cadmium-, vocht- en vetgehalte in leverweefsel, bepaling van PCB-, HCB-, vocht- en vetgehalten in leverweefsel en bepaling van bloedmetabolieten.\r\nDe bemonstering van mosselen vindt plaats in het oostelijke deel van de Westerschelde éénmaal per jaar, medio oktober. Dit wordt uitgevoerd door het RIKZ zelf. In het veld worden mosselen verzameld, verdeeld over vijf lengteklassen tussen 25 en 70 mm. Van de verzamelde mosselen wordt de lengte, het schelpgewicht en de gehalten van vocht, kwik, lood, cadmium, koper, zink, chroom, arseen, nikkel PAK’s (15), PCB’s (28), pesticiden en vet bepaald. Deze analyses worden uitgevoerd door het RIKZ.\r\nDe resultaten van deze monitoring worden in jaarlijkse rapporten vastgelegd, conform de aanbevelingen van de ICES verwoord in de ‘Recommendations on the Methodology of Fish Disease Surveys’.
