In several years, from 2013 onwards, silver eel and hatched salmon smolts were tagged with acoustic tags and released in the river Meuse and the Albert canal to investigate this. The tagged fish are tracked by the acoustic receivers that are installed (one dimensional) in the river Meuse, the Albert canal and the river Scheldt, as well as by 2 dimensional positioning direct upstream of one of the six shipping lock complexes, in Kwaadmechelen. The study is as well enabled by the installation of receivers in the Meuse river in the Netherlands in cooperation with Sportvisserij Nederland (see Maas Nederland network project).","EngDescr":"Navigation locks play an important role for ship navigation on canals and other regulated waterways worldwide. Unfortunately, these structures may severely impact the aquatic ecosystem and freshwater fish in particular. In Belgium (Europe), the Albert Canal connecting the river Meuse to the river Scheldt, is an important migration route for European eel (Anguilla anguilla, critically endangered) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar, vulnerable). During their downstream migration (respectively silver eel and salmon smolt phases) these fish are hampered by six subsequent navigation lock complexes present in the canal. In the coming years, Archimedes screws are to be installed next to these complexes. These can function both as pumping stations and hydropower generators. A first installation is already present at the navigation lock complex of Kwaadmechelen","OrigAbstract":null,"OrigDescr":null,"Comments":null,"ReleaseDate":null,"ReleaseDate0":null,"OrigDescrLang":null,"EmbargoDate":null,"OrigDescrLangNL":null,"OrigLangCode":null,"OrigLangCodeExtended":null,"OrigLangID":null,"DescrCompFlag":0,"DescrTransFlag":0,"Citation":null,"AccessConstraints":null,"UDate":"2018-01-03","CDate":"2018-01-03","CurrencyDate":null,"RevisionDate":null,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2026-05-14 01:44:00.153333","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+02:00"},"CheckedFlag":0,"PublicFlag":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"MarineFlag":0,"FreshFlag":1,"BrackishFlag":0,"TerrestrialFlag":0,"StatusID":1,"DasType":"Data","DasTypeID":1,"DasOrigin":"Sensor platform","Progress":"In Progress","AccessConstraint":"Attribution (CC BY)","AccConstrEN":"Attribution (CC BY)","AccConstrDisplay":" This dataset is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.","License":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","AccConstrDescription":"This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. Using acoustic telemetry distribution, movements and habitat use of tagged migratory fish can be tracked. Tags or transmitters are surgically implanted in the belly of individual fish. When swimming in the vicinity of an acoustic receiver (Vemco), the information of the unique ID-code of the transmitter is stored on the receiver together with an exact timing of the event. When signals are simultaneously received by multiple receivers, an exact positioning of the tagged individuals can be derived from the raw data.
