Los ejemplares se han recolectado como producto de m\u00faltiples proyectos desarrollados tanto por el INVEMAR, como por investigadores externos y otras entidades. La recolecci\u00f3n se ha hecho por medio de t\u00e9cnicas como el arrastre bent\u00f3nico, uso de nasas y trampas. Uno de los crust\u00e1ceos que hacen parte de la colecci\u00f3n es el is\u00f3podo gigante Bathynomus giganteus. Este organismo se encuentra en las aguas profundas del Atl\u00e1ntico tropical, incluyendo el Golfo de M\u00e9xico, el Caribe y el Oc\u00e9ano \u00cdndico (Shih 1972). Se desarrolla en \u00e1reas que oscilan entre los 300 y los 2000 m de profundidad (Obis 2021) y tiene una alimentaci\u00f3n oportunista, centrada principalmente en carro\u00f1a (Shih 1972). Se pueden identificar varios estadios de desarrollo en B. giganteus. El primer estadio, conocido como manca, se caracteriza por la falta de desarrollo del s\u00e9ptimo par de patas, en los individuos j\u00f3venes, el s\u00e9ptimo par de patas est\u00e1 presente pero a\u00fan es peque\u00f1o, mientras que en los adultos se ha desarrollado por completo (Barradas-Ortiz, 2003). Las mancas de B. giganteus no pueden ser sexadas. En algunos casos, es posible identificar el sexo de los juveniles, y en los adultos, se distingue al macho por la presencia de penes en el esternito del s\u00e9ptimo pereionito, mientras que en la hembra se observan oosteguitos en la base de los perei\u00f3podos I a V (Barradas-Ortiz, 2003). En otras especies de is\u00f3podos gigantes se ha reportado el consumo de macroalgas, estas \u00faltimas, son organismos clave en el secuestro del carbono en oc\u00e9anos. De ah\u00ed que, se espera que B. gigantes tambi\u00e9n cumpla este rol y por lo tanto resulta de inter\u00e9s para este proyecto. \n\nLos individuos de B. giganteus que reposan en la Colecci\u00f3n de Crust\u00e1ceos del MHNMC fueron recolectados en el Mar Caribe colombiano entre 2008-06-06 y 2019-01-11 y se encuentran almacenados en lotes que pueden contener uno o m\u00e1s individuos. El material fue consultado entre 2022-07-25 y 2022-08-03 para realizar el registro de medidas morfol\u00f3gicas a los ejemplares.
