We first detect and characterize BPNS heatwaves using the Hobday method (≥5 days above the seasonal 90th-percentile SST), applying satellite SST data and validating against underway (~3 m) temperatures from the RV Simon Stevin as well as buoy data. The detected heatwaves events are compared based on intensity, duration, cumulative intensity, and timing across geographic and biologically defined regions. In parallel, we quantify phytoplankton and zooplankton composition, bloom timing, and abundance from the Belgian LifeWatch time series (zooplankton since 2014; phytoplankton since 2017) using ZooScan and Flowcam across nine coastal and eight offshore stations. By coupling physical extremes with community responses, this work advances mechanistic understanding and improves forecasting of plankton phenology and dominance shifts under a future of more frequent and intense marine heatwaves.</p>","License":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0","StandardTitle":"PhD thesis Eske, A.: Plankton responses to extreme climate events: community dynamics and genetics","doi":null,"vlizDoi":null},{"DasID":8925,"Acronym":null,"EngAbstract":"<p>The Plankton Imager 10 (Pi-10) is an advanced imaging system designed for high-frequency, high-resolution monitoring of plankton in the Belgian part of the North Sea, providing real-time data collection aboard the RV Simon Stevin.</p>","License":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","StandardTitle":"VLIZ observatory data: shipboard underway plankton biodiversity observations by flow-through imaging (Plankton Imager, Pi-10) in the Southern North Sea","doi":null,"vlizDoi":null}],"children":null,"othrel":null,"othrelrev":null,"ownerships":[{"OrderNr":1,"Surname":"Mortelmans","Firstname":"Jonas","Initials":"J.","PerPublicFlag":1,"AdrID":167758,"Email":"jonas.mortelmans@vliz.be","InsPublicFlag":1,"Acronym":"VLIZ","OrigNameLangCode":"en","OrigNameLangID":15,"FullOrigName":"Flanders Marine Institute","InsOwnerCNT":2,"PersID":26622,"InsID":36,"FullInstitute":"Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee","RoleID":61,"Role":"Data creator","OrigName":"Flanders Marine Institute","StandardName":"Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee","FullAcronym":"VLIZ","ORC":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8781-7915","ROR":"https://ror.org/0496vr396"},{"OrderNr":2,"Surname":"Eske","Firstname":"Annika","Initials":"A.","PerPublicFlag":1,"AdrID":171108,"Email":"annika.eske@vliz.be","InsPublicFlag":1,"Acronym":"VLIZ","OrigNameLangCode":"en","OrigNameLangID":15,"FullOrigName":"Flanders Marine Institute","InsOwnerCNT":2,"PersID":45512,"InsID":36,"FullInstitute":"Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee","RoleID":19,"Role":"Data manager","OrigName":"Flanders Marine Institute","StandardName":"Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee","FullAcronym":"VLIZ","ORC":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2634-2194","ROR":"https://ror.org/0496vr396"}],"taxterms":null,"frameworks":null,"otherterms":null,"temporal":null,"geographical":null,"meastypes":null,"dasthemes":[{"DasThemeID":25,"DasTheme":"Biology > Plankton","DasTheme0":"Plankton","DutchTerm":"Plankton"}],"projects":null,"refs":null,"urls":null,"pictures":null,"urlmaps":null,"spatreps":null,"fileformats":null,"resmessage":"","complete":1}
