De ecologie van estuaria staat centraal bij de opbouw van systeemkennis, de monitoring, de ecologische visievorming en de ontwikkeling van beleidsinstrumenten en toetsingskaders. De resultaten delen we maximaal in rapporten, adviezen en wetenschappelijke publicaties.\r\nHet Vlaams en internationaal beleid erkennen de intrinsieke waarde van biodiversiteit en ecosystemen. Enkel robuuste en goed functionerende ecosystemen kunnen op duurzame wijze maatschappelijke functies dragen. Team Estuaria wil in Vlaamse en internationale context het functioneren van estuariene ecosystemen onderzoeken. De focus van het team ligt op de ruimtelijke en temporele ontwikkelingen in het systeem, de samenhang tussen organismen onderling en van organismen met hun omgeving. Door het in kaart brengen van patronen en mechanismen willen we factoren identificeren die via aangepast beheer of beleid tot een beter functioneren van het ecosysteem kunnen leiden.
