The Department of Oceanography at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) originated from the Institute of Marine Biology and Oceanography, a research institute founded in 1952. This institute was the second oceanographic centre created in the country and the first in the Northeast. In 1973, as a result of an administrative reform, the institute was transformed into a department of the then UFPE Technology Centre.
