In de buurt van Breukelen in de provincie Utrecht is het onderzoekscentrum sinds 1957 gevestigd in de 19e eeuwse villa Vijverhof langs de Vecht. Eerst als het Hydrobiologisch Instituut; later omgedoopt tot Limnologisch Instituut. Limnologie staat voor zoetwaterkunde. Het CL bestudeert de levensgemeenschappen in het voor Nederland zo karakteristieke ondiepe zoete water.
