The research of the section ESAT - Electrical Energy Systems and Applications (ESAT-ELECTA) covers a broad spectrum of electrical energy systems and the robust control of industrial systems. More specifically, this group concentrates on the study of power systems, power quality, power electronics, information infrastructure and socio-economic issues. In this regard, the development of a future smart grid is a key objective. ELECTA is co-founder of the knowledge center EnergyVille together with VITO, imec and Hasselt University. At this knowledge center technologies are developed to support a transition to an energy efficient, decarbonised and durable urban environment. This research stretches from solar panels and energy storage, all the way to energy strategies and markets. The marine research component of this group concerns the techno-economic aspects of the energy production by offshore wind turbines. Additionally, research is conducted on offshore transmission networks, the planning of hybrid offshore assets, a north-sea energy plan for transition to sustainable wind energy, electrical networks to connect remote offshore wind farms and testing of critical components in wind turbines.

Het onderzoek van de afdeling ESAT - Elektrische Energie en Computer Architecturen (ESAT-ELECTA) bestrijkt een breed spectrum van elektrische energiesystemen en de robuuste controle van industriële systemen. Meer specifiek concentreert deze groep zich op de studie van energiesystemen, stroomkwaliteit, vermogenselektronica, informatie-infrastructuur en socio-economische vraagstukken. In dit verband is de ontwikkeling van een toekomstig 'smart grid' een belangrijke doelstelling. ELECTA is samen met VITO, imec en de Universiteit Hasselt medeoprichter van het kenniscentrum EnergyVille. In dit kenniscentrum worden technologieën ontwikkeld die de overgang naar een energie-efficiënte, koolstofvrije en duurzame stedelijke omgeving ondersteunen. Dit onderzoek gaat van zonnepanelen en energieopslag tot energiestrategieën en afzetmarkten. De mariene onderzoekscomponent van deze groep betreft de technisch-economische aspecten van de energieproductie door offshore windturbines. Daarnaast wordt onderzoek gedaan naar offshore transmissienetwerken, de planning van hybride offshore voorzieningen, een Noordzee-energieplan voor de overgang naar duurzame windenergie, elektrische netwerken om afgelegen offshore windparken met elkaar te verbinden en het testen van kritische componenten in windturbines.
