The Maritiem Instituut Mercator accepts all youngsters of both sexes who have just finished primary school or who are in secondary school but want to change their studies and broaden their horizons. In first grade (technical TSO and professional BSO) the lessons prepare the pupils for all second and third grades. They get a taste of typical nautical and navigational subjects. The second grade technical offers navigational studies which comprise all the nautical and navigational subjects and engineering studies which are more geared towards working with heavy marine diesel engines. In the second grade professional (BSO) there is a mixture of navigational studies and engineering studies. When you get into the third grade you will get workexperience through a work placement in the maritime sector. You get the chance to train your skills on board of a working vessel. You will either learn to navigate and steer the vessel or you will be practising in the enormous enginerooms. Students who leave Mercator with a diploma in hand will immediately and without any doubt obtain a steady job and a very handsome salary. Our students are spoilt for choice because they can find employment in the dredgingcompanies, the tug services, the merchant navy, fisheries, ports and harbours, the Belgian navy, the port authority agency, shipyards, off shore installations, etc.

Het Maritiem Instituut Mercator staat open voor alle jongeren, zowel jongens als meisjes, die hun lagere school hebben beëindigd of die tijdens hun middelbare studies hun studiekeuze willen wijzigen. In de brede eerste graad (TSO of BSO) krijg je een grondige basisopleiding als voorbereiding op alle TSO of BSO richtingen. Voor het eerst proef je ook van nautische vakken. In de tweede graad kies je al duidelijk voor een opleiding “dek” (navigatie) of “motoren” (scheepsmachines) in het TSO of een “gemengde opleiding” in het BSO. In de derde graad loop je ook stage in de maritieme sector om je opleiding te vervolmaken. Je wordt getraind om zelf een schip te kunnen besturen of een machinekamer te kunnen bedienen. Wie afstudeert aan Mercator kan onmiddellijk terecht in een goed betaalde job in alle maritieme sectoren (baggervaart, sleepvaart, koopvaardij, zeevisserij, havenactiviteiten, zeemacht, verkeerswezen, scheepswerven, boortorens ...)
