Voorbeelden van onderzoeksgebieden in de toegepaste statistiek zijn longitudinale metingen, clustered data, onvolledige gegevens, multivariate data, klinische studies, epidemiologische studies.\r\n\r\nHet fundamenteel onderzoek in de wiskundige en toegepaste statistiek vormt de basis om problemen uit de praktijk te analyseren.
