The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) focusses on basic and strategic research into individual organisms, populations, ecological communities and ecosystems. The NIOO-KNAW employs more than 250 people at three research centres and its headquarters. Research at the Centre for Estuarine and Marine Ecology (CEME) in Yerseke concentrates on ecosystems in brackish and salt water, while the Centre for Limnology (CL) in Nieuwersluis focuses on freshwater ecology. The Centre for Terrestrial Ecology (CTE) in Heteren emphasises land-based ecology. Originally, the three centres were founded in the fifties as independent institutes, but since 1992 they have joined forces to form the NIOO-KNAW.

Het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) richt zich op fundamenteel en strategisch onderzoek naar organismen, populaties, levensgemeenschappen en ecosystemen. Het NIOO-KNAW heeft meer dan 250 mensen in dienst, verspreid over drie onderzoekscentra en het Bureau Diensten. Op het Centrum voor Estuariene en Mariene Ecologie (CEME) in Yerseke bestuderen de onderzoekers de ecosystemen van brak en zout water. Het Centrum voor Limnologie (CL) in Nieuwersluis is gespecialiseerd in zoetwater ecologie. Op de derde locatie in Heteren - het Centrum voor Terrestrische Ecologie (CTE) - staat het leven op het land centraal. De drie vestigingen zijn in de jaren 50 van de vorige eeuw ontstaan als zelfstandige instituten: het Delta Instituut voor Hydrobiologisch Onderzoek, het Hydrobiologisch en later Limnologisch Instituut en het Instituut voor Oecologisch Onderzoek. Sinds 1992 hebben de onderzoekers hun krachten gebundeld in het ecologie-brede NIOO. Het NIOO heette oorspronkelijk het Nederlands Instituut voor Oecologisch Onderzoek, maar in september 2002 is dit omgedoopt tot het begrijpelijkere Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie.
