De groep was en is betrokken in meerdere projecten omtrent de zink, cadmium en lood verontreiniging in de Limburgse en Antwerpse Kempen. De groep startte met laboratorium en in situ studies betreffende fytoremediatie (fytostabilisatie en fyto-extractie) in 1985 en is betrokken in meerdere nationale en internationale projecten en samenwerkingen in dit domein. Fytoremediatie van organische contaminanten, met name nitro-aromaten, oliën en BTEX, behoort ook tot het onderzoeksdomein van de groep. Speciale aandacht wordt besteed aan de interactie tussen planten en plant-geassocieerde micro-organismen (mycorrhiza en bacteriën).\r\nBiologische testen voor het evalueren van de bodemtoxiciteit werden ontwikkeld. De activiteiten zijn practische toepassingen van het fundamentele onderzoek van de groep. Dit laatste is geconcentreerd op de (eco-)fysiologische, cellulaire en moleculaire effecten en sekwentie van responsen na toediening van contaminanten aan planten en mycorrhizen. De studie van cellulaire verdedigings- en tolerantie mechanismen tegen zware metalen maken ook deel uit van het fundamentele onderzoek. Speciale aandacht wordt besteed aan de subcellulaire localisatie van zowel contaminanten als verdedigingssystemen.
