The Fund stimulates and funds fundamental academic research at the universities in the Flemish Community and at scientific research institutes. It is Flanders' instrument for supporting and stimulating fundamental research and advancing its quality on the basis of academic, inter-university competition. Fundamental research is sustained by first-rate, highly specialised researchers: it is the basis for new knowledge and its associated human capital open ways for the goal-oriented, applied, technological, strategic research. By creating prosperity and well-being it stimulates as well the concerned community as the society as a whole. The fund endeavours to achieve its purpose by: support for individual researchers, supporting prominent research teams, promoting (national and international) scientific contacts and co-operation, awarding scientific prizes and participating in international co-operation projects.

De actie van het FWO-Vlaanderen richt zich op het verleggen van de kennisgrenzen in alle wetenschapsgebieden, stimuleert en financiert het fundamenteel wetenschappelijk onderzoek aan de universiteiten in de Vlaamse Gemeenschap en aan de instellingen voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Samenvattend kan gesteld worden dat het F.W.O.-Vlaanderen het Vlaamse instrument is om op basis van wetenschappelijke interuniversitaire competitie fundamenteel onderzoek te ondersteunen, te stimuleren en de kwaliteit ervan te bevorderen. Dit fundamenteel onderzoek wordt gedragen door uitmuntende en hooggespecialiseerde onderzoekers, ligt aan de basis van nieuwe kennis en know-how en heeft een grote maatschappelijke en culturele waarde. Op langere termijn vormt deze kennis en het gevormde menselijke kapitaal de basis van het gericht, toegepast, technologisch, strategisch, beleidsondersteunend en -voorbereidend onderzoek en stimuleren ze de totaliteit van de betrokken gemeenschap en de gehele maatschappij door het scheppen van welvaart en welzijn.
