During the past few years molecular systematics has resulted in a vast number of phylogenetic hypotheses of plant relationships at different systematic levels. Some of these conflict with classical hypotheses developed on the basis of structural, morphological, and anatomical data. Therefore the re-evaluation of character homologies is highly needed, particularly among angiosperms, in order to establish more robust phylogenetic hypotheses.
