The Department of Microbial Wetland Ecology is studying the structure and function of two types of community in eutrophic shallow lakes and lowland rivers: benthic communities of nitrifying bacteria, and pelagic communities of cyanobacteria and associated heterotrophic bacteria, protozoa and viruses. We are looking at these communities in both the laboratory and their natural environment.
