The analysis of vertebrate remains and molluscs allows a reconstruction of the animal-man relationship in the past. Both economic and ecological aspects are dealt with, some of which are siginificant beyond the pure archaeological field. Interesting data from a fisheries point of view include the historical dimension that is added to zoogeographical research, allowing, for instance, to document the decline of estuarine fish in Flanders. Also as a result of the intense cooperation since 1990 with the Flemish Heritage Institute (VIOE), phenomena of overfishing from the late medieval times onward could be documented for the North Sea.","AbstractOtherLang":"De Eenheid Archeozoölogie van het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen onderzoekt dierlijke resten afkomstig van opgravingen in België, het Nabije Oosten en Afrika. Naast overblijfselen van gewervelde dieren worden ook mollusken bestudeerd met als doel de relatie tussen mens en dier in het verleden te documenteren. Zowel economische als ecologische aspecten komen aan bod, waarvan een aantal het archeologische domein overschrijden en ook voor visserijbiologen interessant kunnen zijn. Het botmateriaal geeft een grotere tijdsdimensie aan zoögeografisch onderzoek en laat bijvoorbeeld toe de achteruitgang van estuariene vissoorten in Vlaanderen te documenteren.
