The reconstruction of the evolving interaction between humans and their environment (landscapes, flora and fauna) provides both paleaeoecological and palaeoeconomic interpretations. One of the specific research themes comprises the habitation and exploitation history of the Flemish coastal plain, focusing both on the reconstruction of past agricultural activities, and the impact of humans on the natural environment (water management, deforestation, etc.). The geological evolution of the coastal plain (with, e.g., regressions and transgressions) is studied through the sampling of natural sequences such as peat layers. A second line of research, of importance for our knowledge of the history of coast and sea, consists in the diachronic analysis of consumption remains, more precisely fish bones, from Flemish sites (both coastal and inland). This yields information about the evolution of the Flemish marine fishery, illuminating aspects such as the development of fishing techniques, the localisation of fishing grounds, selection within the catch, seasonal fishing activities or overfishing. This research is organised as a close cooperation with the Osteology Laboratory of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.","AbstractOtherLang":"Het VIOE verricht studie naar het menselijk handelen in het verleden, o.a. aan de hand van de analyse van mensen-, dieren- en plantenresten uit archeologische opgravingen. De studie van de relatie tussen de mens en zijn omgeving (landschap, flora en fauna) levert zowel paleo-economische als paleo-ecologische informatie. Een van de specifieke onderzoeksthema’s is de bewoningsgeschiedenis van de Vlaamse kustvlakte waarbij de reconstructie van de evolutie van akkerbouw en veeteelt van groot belang is, net zoals de impact van de mens op de natuurlijke omgeving (ontbossing, bedijking, etc.). Ook de natuurlijke evolutie van de kustvlakte (transgressies, regressies) wordt door de bemonstering van natuurlijke sequenties, zoals veenafzettingen, bestudeerd. Een tweede, voor kust en zee belangrijke onderzoekslijn is de diachrone studie van consumptieresten uit Vlaamse sites, meer bepaald de skeletresten van vis, wat informatie levert over de evolutie van de Vlaamse kust- en zeevisserij. Thema’s als de ontwikkeling van visserijtechnieken, de lokalisatie van de visgronden, de selectie van de vangst, seizoenale activiteitspatronen of overbevissing komen aan bod. Het zwaartepunt van dit onderzoek ligt in het Laboratorium voor Osteologie van het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen, waarmee intens wordt samengewerkt.","AbstractLangCode":"nl","AbstractLangID":41,"AbstractLang":"Dutch","AbstractLangNL":"Nederlands","SuccessorOfInsID":null,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2024-06-04 01:34:19.073000","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+00:00"},"PrevIns":null,"PrevAcro":null,"PublicFlag":1,"CheckedFlag":1,"ParID":11937,"InstituteType":"Scientific","EnvName":"Belgium","ISO3166":"BE","LevelName":null,"ND":"2003-11-26","UD":"2012-06-05","EncAddress":", Herman Teirlinckgebouw, Havenlaan 88 bus 5, 1000 Brussel, Belgium"},"parent":{"PublicFlag":1,"InsID":11937,"OrigNameLangCode":"en","OrigNameLangID":15,"FullStandardName":"Agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed","FullOrigName":"Flanders Heritage Agency","Acronym":null},"institutes":null,"references":[],"conferences":null,"datasets":null,"persons":[{"PersID":12410,"Surname":"Bastiaens","Firstname":"Jan","Initials":"J.","DirectorFlag":null,"MarineSciFlag":null,"SpecializedFlag":null,"Function":"Researcher"},{"PersID":12409,"Surname":"Deforce","Firstname":"Koen","Initials":"K.","DirectorFlag":null,"MarineSciFlag":null,"SpecializedFlag":null,"Function":"Research"},{"PersID":1278,"Surname":"Ervynck","Firstname":"Anton","Initials":"A.","DirectorFlag":null,"MarineSciFlag":null,"SpecializedFlag":null,"Function":"Researcher animal remains"}],"pastpers":null,"subpers":null,"projects":null,"urls":[{"URL":"www.vioe.be","externalID":null,"URLTypeCode":null,"URLType":"Institute home page"}],"pictures":[],"published":null,"affrefs":null,"collections":null,"thesterms":[{"ThesaurusTerm":"Coastal fisheries","ThestID":1638,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List"},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Coastal zone","ThestID":1654,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List"},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Historical account","ThestID":4015,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List"},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Marine archaeology","ThestID":4987,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List"},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Maritime archaeology","ThestID":null,"ThesTypID":null,"ThesType":null},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Regressions","ThestID":6845,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List"},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Transgressions","ThestID":8705,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List"}],"taxterms":[{"TaxTerm":"Pisces [Fish]","AphiaID":11676}],"geoterms":null,"thestermsFRIS":[{"ThesaurusTerm":"Coastal fisheries","DutchTerm":"Kustvisserij","ThestID":1638,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List","Code":"c_1696"},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Coastal zone","DutchTerm":"Kustgebied","ThestID":1654,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List","Code":null},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Historical account","DutchTerm":"Historische beschrijving","ThestID":4015,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List","Code":null},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Marine archaeology","DutchTerm":"Mariene archeologie","ThestID":4987,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List","Code":null},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Maritime archaeology","DutchTerm":"Maritieme archeologie","ThestID":null,"ThesTypID":null,"ThesType":null,"Code":null},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Regressions","DutchTerm":"Regressies","ThestID":6845,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List","Code":null},{"ThesaurusTerm":"Transgressions","DutchTerm":null,"ThestID":8705,"ThesTypID":1,"ThesType":"ASFA Thesaurus List","Code":"c_552569a8"}],"nXtins":null,"previns":null,"spcols":[{"SpColID":99,"SpName":"Marine expertise"},{"SpColID":124,"SpName":"Marine expertise: Speciality: Biological oceanography"},{"SpColID":127,"SpName":"Marine expertise: Speciality: Earth sciences"},{"SpColID":120,"SpName":"Marine expertise: Type: Flemish scientific institution"},{"SpColID":130,"SpName":"Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium"}],"resmessage":"","complete":1,"participantrec":null,"peerrevs":0,"urlmaps":[]}
