Voor zijn studie deed hij onderzoek naar visserij-geïnduceerde evolutie in Noordzee schol bij Wageningen IMARES en naar invasieve exotische ribkwallen in Nederland bij het NIOZ. Na zijn studie werkte hij als promovendus bij het NIOZ, waar hij onderzoek deed aan diverse kwallensoorten en hun rol als mogelijke concurrent van vissen. Ook onderzocht hij de lange termijn veranderingen in visvangsten in de Waddenzee. Verder nam hij als duikend zeebioloog deel aan de Noordzee expeditie van Stichting Duik de Noordzee Schoon en WNF.
