Reliable knowledge of trace element contents is thus required for reasons of public health (toxic and nutritional elements) and to ensure that fish products satisfy national regulations e.g. the Italian legislation which specifies maximum permissible limits of 0.5 ug/kg for methyl mercury and 0.8 ug/kg for total mercury. \r\nReference materials (RMs) are widely required to ensure quality in trace element analyses.
