This study is the fourth component of the ‘Research on the environmental effects of the SIGMA plan: Effects of dredgings and harbour expansion on the environment’ This study concerns the monitoring of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton is an important component within the carbon cycle as within the food web. Total chlorophyll a can be used as a measure for the total phytoplankton biomass. Ecological modeling requires a subdivision of the total phytoplankton in `Diatoms fresh water, `Diatoms brackish water, `algae (remaining) fresh water and `algae (remaining) brackish water.

Deze studie maakt het 4de perceel uit van het "Onderzoek naar de gevolgen van het Sigmaplan, baggeractiviteiten en havenuitbreiding in de Zeeschelde op het milieu". Dit perceel betreft de monitoring van fytoplankton. Fytoplankton is belangrijk, zowel als onderdeel binnen de koolstofcyclus als binnen het voedselweb. Totaal chlorofyl a kan worden gebruikt als maat voor de totale fytoplanktonbiomassa. De ecologische modellering vereist een opsplitsing van het totaal fytoplankton in ‘Diatomeën zoetwater’, ‘Diatomeën brakwater’, ‘Algen (overige) zoetwater’ en ‘Algen (overige) brakwater’.
