The mesocosm experiments at Kruibeke was created to estimate the impact of pollution on flooding areas. The structure at Wilrijk studies the influence of the tide on the increase of sheer. The flow of contaminants is monitored. The impact of pollution caused by the most important contaminants on key species (such as Oligochaeta and sheer) is quantified. The lethal responses are also quantified using biomarkers.  A recent developed technique which shows shifts that are caused by pollution in microbial communities, is applied. Those microbial communities are responsible for important ecosystem functions such as the carbon and nutrient cycle.","AbstractOtherLang":"Deze studie maakt het 8ste perceel uit van het \"Onderzoek naar de gevolgen van het Sigmaplan, baggeractiviteiten en havenuitbreiding in de Zeeschelde op het milieu\".\r\n\r\nDit perceel volgt de ontwikkelingen in twee mesocosmos-opstellingen op: een te Kruibeke, en een op de UIA-campus te Wilrijk.  De mesocosmos-opstelling te Kruibeke dient om de invloed van verontreiniging op overstromingsgebieden in te schatten.  Deze te Wilrijk dient om de invloed van het getij op de groei van riet te bestuderen.  De aanvoer van contaminanten wordt gevolgd.  Daarnaast worden de effecten van verontreiniging van de belangrijkste contaminanten op de sleutelsoorten gekwantificeerd.  De sleutelsoorten zijn riet en Oligochaeta.  De sublethale responsen worden gekwantificeerd met behulp van biomarkers.  Daarnaast wordt een recent ontwikkelde techniek toegepast die verschuivingen t.g.v. verontreiniging in microbi\u00eble populaties aantoont.
