As these pollutants are not permanently stored in these sediments, they form a real 'time bomb'. Under certain conditions these pollutants may be released into the water column and counteract measurements actually undertaken to improve the quality of river- and seawater. \r\n\r\nThe objective of this project is to assess the risks of a planned or unforeseen modification of the sedimentary environment (increased supply of oxygen to the water column and sediments as a result of the actual measures for waste water treatment or through activities such as bioturbation, dredging and the management of banks ) in the northern part of France, the south of Belgium and the coastal zone. \r\n\r\nThis problem can only be the object of a study in the framework of a cross-border programme and a common policy in both regions. Only a multidisciplinary group with sufficient critical mass and know-how can conduct a project with such a geographic interest. To fulfil these criteria therefore it is necessary to join skills and resources from both regions in order to develop new techniques applicable to a wide range of pollutants, to refine and further explore the techniques, and to thus be able to determine the bioavailability of pollutants in water and sediments, to validate the methodology on the field and through modelling techniques to develop a predictable instrument. \r\n\r\nIn a second stage, the project aims to develop a policy for the exchange of students and scientists in order to create a cross-border research network for water quality. \r\n\r\nThe first three years of the project will be dedicated to: \r\n\r\n<li>development of a common policy for methodology and an improvement of existing but yet incomplete techniques (each participant must make their know-how available to the others) \r\n<li>the application of this methodology on both French and Belgian pilot sites (fresh- and seawater) \r\n<li>creation of a research network and experimental models. \r\n\r\nIn later stages, the project aims to widen the geographical reach and to develop a cross-border research network for water quality. A biochemical sediment model will permit a better understanding and quantification of the sediment as well as the flux from and to the sediment.","AbstractOtherLang":"De huidige en vooral de vroegere antropogene activiteiten hebben onder meer een accumulatie aan contaminanten in aquatische sedimenten tot gevolg gehad. Deze polluenten zitten niet definitief vast zodat deze sedimenten een ‘tijdbom’ vormen. Onder bepaalde condities kunnen deze polluenten uit de waterkolom vrijkomen en de huidige genomen maatregelen voor de verbetering van de kwaliteit van zowel rivier- als zeewater tegenwerken. \r\nDe doelstelling van dit project is om de mogelijke risico’s in te schatten bij een geplande of toevallige wijziging van de sedimentenomgeving (betere oxygenatie van de waterkolom en de sedimenten dankzij de aan gang zijnde maatregelen voor behandeling van afvalwater maar ook effecten zoals bioturbatie, baggerwerken en de aanleg van oevers ) en dit in het noorden van Frankrijk, het zuiden van België en in de kustzone. \r\n\r\nDe studie van het voorgestelde probleem kan maar uitgevoerd worden in het kader van een grensoverschrijdend programma en een gemeenschappelijke politiek in beide regio's. Een geografische zo belangrijk project kan maar door een multidisciplinaire groep met voldoende kritische massa en know-how uitgevoerd worden. Om aan die voorwaarden te voldoen is het noodzakelijk om de capaciteiten en de competenties van excellentiecentra uit de twee regio's samen te brengen. \r\nDeze dienen in eerste instantie gezamenlijk hun kennis te gebruiken om hun nieuwe technieken toepasbaar te maken voor een zo breed mogelijk gamma aan polluenten, evenals ze te verfijnen en verder te exploreren om de biobeschikbaarheid van de contaminanten in het water en de sedimenten te bepalen, om de methodologie te valideren op het terrein, en om een voorspellend instrument op te stellen: modellisatie. \r\n\r\nIn tweede instantie voorziet het project erin een politiek te ontwikkelen voor uitwisseling van studenten en wetenschappers om dusdanig een grensoverschrijdend onderzoeksnetwerk te creëren inzake waterkwaliteit. \r\n\r\nDe eerste drie jaren van het programma zullen gewijd zijn aan: \r\n\r\n<li>een gemeenschappelijke politiek voor de verdere ontwikkeling van de bestaande, maar slechts partieel voldoende methodologie (iedere deelnemer zal al zijn kennis ten dienste stellen van het project en overdragen naar de partners). \r\n<li>toepassing van de methodologie op zowel Belgische als Franse locaties met wederzijds akkoord (zoet- en zeewater). \r\n<li>een netwerk en modellisatie. \r\n\r\nIn de daaropvolgende jaren wordt voorzien om de geografische bestrijking uit te breiden, deze te bestuderen en een grensoverschrijdend onderzoeksnetwerk te ontwikkelen voor de waterkwaliteit.
