The framework directive water imposes regular biomonitoring of the surface waters. The Institute of Forrestry and Game Management is responsible for the implementation and execution of directive and has assigned the biomonitoring of estuarine fish to the laboratory. The aims of this project are: 1) continous monitoring of fish in het lower Zeeschelde at a fixed sampling station (1 fyke net at Zandvliet); 2) annual monitoring of 4 sampling stations in the estuary.

De kaderrichtlijn Water legt regelmatige biomonitoring van de oppervlaktewateren op. Het Instituut voor Bosbouw en Wildbeheer is verantwoordelijk voor de biomonitoring van de visbestanden. IBW besteed het opvolgen van het visbestand van de Boven-Zeeschelde en de Beneden-Zeeschelde uit. De doelstellingen zijn 1) de permanente monitoring van de Beneden-Zeeschelde op een vaste lokatie (1 fuik in Zandvliet); 2) jaarlijkse monitoring van vier geselecteerde plaatsen langsheen de Zeeschelde.
