Throughout history both ports have been confronted with the same exogenous factors, they are both situated in the same delta and they share more or less the same hinterland. Why did the port of Antwerp and Rotterdam nevertheless become two entirely different ports? This question can only be answered by concentrating on the core business of the ports: cargo flows. Not only shall we study maritime transhipment, we will also concentrate on cargo flows to and from the hinterland; Furthermore we will pay attention to value added in both ports. Value added is a very important criterion in the expansion of ports and a very comparable one. The development of both ports will finally be explained through transport prices and port rates.","AbstractOtherLang":"Dit project heeft tot doel de ontwikkeling van de havens van Rotterdam en Antwerpen te bestuderen (1860-2000). Doorheen de geschiedenis zijn beide havens geconfronteerd met dezelfde exogene factoren, beiden bevinden zich in dezelfde delta en delen  ongeveer hetzelfde hinterland. Waarom groeide Antwerpen en Rotterdam dan uit tot twee sterk verschillende havens? Deze vraag kunnen we slechts beantwoorden door ons te concentreren op de kernactiviteit van de havens, namelijk de goederenstromen. We zullen daarbij niet alleen de maritieme overslag bestuderen, maar ons onderzoek ook richten op de goederenstromen van en naar het achterland. Verder willen we aandacht besteden aan de toegevoegde waardecreatie in beide havens. Toegevoegde waarde is een belangrijk criterium in de ontwikkeling van de havens en bovendien een zeer vergelijkbaar gegeven.
