Both the Southern North Sea (Belgian Continental Shelf) and the Western Scheldt estuary are monitored for international purposes : Oslo & Paris Commission (Paris Convention 1992), the Joint Assessment Monitoring Programme (JAMP) and the Regional Task Team II North Sea, and national purposes : passible harmful effects of sand axtraction, dredging. MUMM analyses nutrients, salinity, temperature, suspended matter, dissolved oxygen, TOC an POC, chlorophyl a, phaeophytine and optical parameters in the watercolumn. Also the phytoplankton enumeration and species composition and the benthos species composition and biomass are part of the monitoring programme. Quality assurance and quality control in analytical chemistry and laboratory practice receive a high priority.

Monitoring en evaluatie van de kwaliteit van het mariene milieu van het Belgisch Continentaal Plat en het Schelde-estuarium. Naleving van de internationale verplichtingen in het kader van de Oslo & Parijs Commissies (Verdrag van Parijs 1992) en het Joint Assessment and Monitoring Programme (JAMP) en bijzondere akties van de "Regional Task Team II" Noordzee. Monitoring van het milieu i.v.m. diverse impacten o.a. zand- en grindexploitaties in baggeractiviteiten. Dit programma betreft de monitoring van nutriënten, zoutgehalte, temperatuur, gesuspendeerde stoffen, opgeloste zuurstof, TOC en POC, chlorophyll a, phaephytine en optische parameters gemeten in de waterkolom evenals de phytoplankton telling en species samenstelling en de macrofyten species samenstelling en biomassa. Voor de overige parameters in de waterkolom, het sediment en de biota, zie de programma's van de VUB-ANCH en het Centrum voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek, Departement Zeevisserij (Ecologische Monitoring). Een grote nadruk wordt gelegd op de "Quality Assurance" en "clean technology".
