Detailed records of wave buoys in the Belgian coastal area will be analysed. The analysis is focused on single extreme waves in wave records, and not on the extreme analysis of integrated parameters of the sea- state. These integrated parameters are still needed in the search for possible indicators of increased risk to encounter unusual waves, given the sea state. Such indicators are of great value in forecasting dangerous sea conditions. This information is needed for short and long term risk assessment in order to avoid and/or minimize human, environmental and economic loss or damaga in sea-affected operations.","AbstractOtherLang":"Het project heeft als doel de statistische en fysische eigenschappen van individuele golven in tijdreeksen van ondiep-watergolven beter te begrijpen en beter te beschrijven. Gedetailleerde meetreeksen van een aantal boeien voor onze Belgische kust zullen geanalyseerd worden. De nadruk van de analyse ligt op alleenstaande extreme golven in een golfmeetreeks en niet op de extreme waarde analyse van geintegreerde golfparameters. Deze geintegreerde golfparameters zijn nog altijd nodig in de zoektocht naar mogelijke indicatoren die wijzen op een verhoogd risico om geconfronteerd te worden met & apos;ongewone & apos; golven, gegeven zijnde de gemiddelde golftoestand.
