The consequences of changes in biodiversity, natural or anthropogenic,\r\nfor the functioning of coastal ecosystems, are still unknown. \r\n \r\n\r\nTo address this issue, two phenomena will be unravelled with regard to the (changes of) benthic biodiversity, along the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Baltic coast. These two phenomena are:\r\n1.The north-eastward shift in distribution of benthic species along the European coast\r\n2. The Baltic has on average a low diversity of life.
