Among these species, the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) are specially concerned due to their coastal distribution, in direct contact with shipping, fishing, and noise pollution and to its overall presence in reasonable number along the European coasts. Whereas some aspects such as the xenobiotic pollution are already largely studied, human impact is however hard to establish, mainly due to a blatant lack of information on marine mammals population ecology, density, distribution and diversity.\r\n\r\n<li>Project Description\r\n\r\n<ul><li>Objectives\r\n\r\nThis project aims to assess the viability of the harbour porpoise and harbour seal populations in the North Sea (focusing mainly on its southern Bay) through \r\n\r\n1. the characterisation of their genetic structure and diversity\r\n2. a better understanding of their feeding ecology\r\n3. the assessment of their susceptibility of being trapped accidentally in fishing nets\r\n\r\n<li>Methodology \r\n\r\nFollowing approaches will be considered to reach the objectives:\r\n\r\n1. The genetic structure of these populations will be investigated using four complementary genetic markers: the D-loop region of the mtDNA, the microsatellite markers of the Y and of the autosomous chromosomes, and the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC).\r\n2. The determination of stable carbon and nitrogen signatures (d3C and d15N) in the muscles and blood of harbour porpoises and harbour seals will provide some further insights on their respective diets. \r\n3. The susceptibility to incidental capture will be investigated by both post-mortem investigations and systematic inventory of carcasses in fishing nets.","AbstractOtherLang":"<ul><li>Context\r\n\r\nAlle populaties van zeezoogdieren in de Noordoost-Atlantische sector worden beschouwd als zeer kwetsbaar; aangezien meerdere populaties of achteruitgaan of minstens bedreigd worden, zijn z e het onderwerp van meerdere internationale directieven met het oog op bescherming.\r\nDoor hun voorkomen langs kustgebieden, is er een belangrijke interactie en mogelijk negatieve impact van scheepvaart, visvangst en algemene geluidspollutie op de populaties van in het bijzonder bruinvis (Phocoena phocoena) en gewone zeehond (Phoca vitulina). Beide soorten komen in principe algemeen voor langs de hele Europese Atlantische kustlijn.\r\nEen aantal aspecten, in het bijzonder betreffend de impact van xenobionte polluenten werden min of meer reeds uitvoerig bestudeerd. De algemene impact van menselijke activiteiten is echter moeilijk in kaart te brengen, ook door het ontbreken van basisinformatie betreffende de populatie-ecologie, de densiteiten, distributie en genetische diversiteit van de populaties.\r\n\r\n<li>Beschrijving van het Project\r\n\r\n<ul><li>Doelstellingen\r\n\r\nHet project beoogt een bijdrage te leveren tot de studie van de leefbaarheid van de populaties van bruinvis en gewone zeehond in de Noordzee, in het bijzonder in de Zuidelijke Baai van de Noordzee, en dit door:\r\n\r\n1. Een karakteriseren van de genetische structuur en diversiteit van de populaties \r\n2. Een beter begrijpen van hun voedingsecologie\r\n3. Een inschatting van de kwetsbaarheid van beide soorten voor 'bijvangst' door de visserij\r\n\r\n<li>Methodologie\r\n\r\nOm aan de objectieven te voldoen, wordt langs volgende onderzoekslijnen gewerkt:\r\n\r\n1. De genetische structuur van de populaties wordt onderzocht aan de hand van 4 complementaire genetische 'markers' : 'D-loop region' van het mtDNA, microsatelliet-markers markers van het Y en van de autosomale chromosomen, en van het voornaamste Histocompatibiliteitscomplex (MHC).\r\n2. Determinatie van stabiele koolstof en stikstof signaturen (d13C and d15N) in spier en bloed van beide soorten zal een verder inzicht geven van hun voedingspatroon\r\n3.
