Commercial surfactants consist of several tens to hundreds of isomers and homologues of anionic, cationic, nonionic and amphoteric compounds. Therefore, their identification in the environment is very complicated. To obtain more knowledge about the environmental fate of surfactants and their degradation products, improved analytical methodology is needed. \r\nIn a collaboration project with other European institutes, these rnethods will be developed, permitting both the determination of the various surfactant groups and the identification of new metabolites.\r\nAim: \r\nThis project will focus on nonionic surfactants (NIS), in particular alkylphenol ethoxylates (APE). An analytical method for the determination and quantification of APE and their metabolites wilI be developed, and their fate in different aquatic environments in Europe will be assessed.\r\nResearch: \r\nThe analytical method will include LC- APCI-MS and LC-ESI-MS, which will be compared to methods used by the other partners, in order to find the best technique for each type of surfactant. The fate of NIS is studied in two projects. The first one focuses on the fate of surfactants in sewage treatment plants in Spain, Gerrnany and The Netherlands. By sampling rivers upstrearn and downstream of the plants, as well as influents, effluents and sewage sludges, it will be assessed what actually happens to the alkylphenol ethoxylates and what the enviromnental consequences are. \r\nThe other project investigates the fate of surfactants once they reach Dutch estuaries and marine environments. In order to assess the environmenental risk of APE, the analytical results will be combined with toxicological data on both the surfactants and their metabolites. The metabolites play an important role in this risk assessment, because some of them act as endocrine disruptors.","AbstractOtherLang":"Alkylfenol ethoxylaten (APEO) zijn synthetische stoffen die in grote hoeveelheden (wereldwijd ongeveer 700.000 ton per jaar) worden toegepast in industriële schoonmaakmiddelen. Niels Jonkers onderzocht de milieueffecten van deze stoffen en hun afbraakproducten. Enkele mogelijke afbraakproducten, bijvoorbeeld nonylfenol (NP), hebben onder meer een hormoonverstorend effect op organismen. In de nieuwe Europese milieuwetgeving van de Kaderrichtlijn Water worden APEO en NP dan ook als prioritair schadelijke stoffen geclassificeerd. Jonkers stelde de aanwezigheid van deze stoffen vast in de Rijnmond, Westerschelde en het Noordzeekustgebied. De hoogste concentraties werden gemeten op locaties ver uit de kust, hetgeen suggereert dat de scheepvaart een belangrijke bron is van deze stoffen. In meerdere gevallen vond Jonkers concentraties van APEO en NP die boven de voorgestelde Maximum Toelaatbare Risiconiveau s (MTR) liggen.","DateLastModified":{"date":"2024-05-06 10:25:46.257000","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+00:00"},"ParentProID":null,"BeginYear":1998,"EndYear":2004,"BMonth":6,"EMonth":4,"BeginMonth":"June","EndMonth":"April","OrigTitleLangCode":"nl","OrigTitleLangID":41,"OrigTitleLangNL":"Nederlands","OrigTitleLang":"Dutch","OtherAbstractLangCode":"nl","OtherAbstractLangID":41,"OtherAbstractLang":"Dutch","OtherAbstractLangNL":"Nederlands","Progress":"Completed","ProgressNL":"Afgelopen","PublicFlag":1,"CheckedFlag":1,"ND":"2005-10-10","UD":"2007-07-06","DMPFlag":0,"Budget":null,"BudgetCurrency":"EUR"},"parent":null,"persons":null,"projects":null,"events":null,"datasets":null,"institutes":[{"instituterec":{"Acronym":"IenW","ProPartID":6747,"PublicFlag":1,"OrigNameLangCode":"en","OrigNameLangID":15,"FullOrigName":"Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management","Line1":null,"Line2":null,"Line3":null,"Line4":null,"InsID":4383,"FullStandardName":"Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat","Role":"Sponsor","RoleID":3,"EncAddress":""},"parent":null,"institutes":null,"references":null,"conferences":null,"datasets":null,"persons":[],"pastpers":null,"subpers":null,"projects":null,"urls":null,"pictures":null,"published":null,"affrefs":null,"collections":null,"thesterms":null,"taxterms":null,"geoterms":null,"thestermsFRIS":null,"nXtins":null,"previns":null,"spcols":null,"resmessage":"no id specified","complete":0,"participantrec":null,"peerrevs":null,"urlmaps":null},{"instituterec":{"Acronym":"SENSE","ProPartID":6750,"PublicFlag":1,"OrigNameLangCode":null,"OrigNameLangID":null,"FullOrigName":null,"Line1":"De Boelelaan 1087","Line2":"1081 HV Amsterdam","Line3":null,"Line4":null,"InsID":6473,"FullStandardName":"Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam;
