The \"Project Sea\" (Projet Mer / Projekt Zee), funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office, was the first phase (1970-1976) of this programme and its purpose was to assess the quality of the marine environment or \"assemble a reliable scientific basis and develop modelling techniques to permit both qualitative and quantitative simulation of the impact of natural phenomena or anthropic effects\". \r\nFor 5 years samples were collected at different stations in the Belgian Continental Shelf (BCS) using different types of instruments. \"Project Sea\" had also a multi-and interdisciplinary character: more than 200 scientists with different expertise (biology, geology, chemistry, physics,...) worked on this project.
