On the basis of a digital terrain model and a hydrological model, run-off and interaction with the groundwater dynamics of the selected systems will next be detennined (VUB). By studying diversity and distribution patterns of important representatives of plants (UA) and invertebrates (KUL) in relation with the hydrology of the selected habitats it is finally the intention to reveal any association between community structure on the one hand and hydrology-related variables on the other (all groups). Together with the quantitative genetic study of the life history characters of selected flagship species (large branchiopods), this will allow us to study the evolutionary flexibility of species under time pressure and to model the expected distribution of species considering various scenarios of hydrological changes of the habitats. The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (OW AF) will ultimately use these data to support the implementation of the legal principles stated in the National Water Act (1998) for the sustainable use of water in the region.","AbstractOtherLang":"Inleiding Tijdelijke wetlands vormen een belangrijk type ecosysteem in de Zuidafrikaanse Kaapstreek (Davies & Day, 1998). Deze worden doorgaans gekenmerkt door een relatief hoge diversiteit en vooral een kenmerkende endemiciteit van de grote branchiopoden en andere plantaardige zowel als dierlijke organismen (Hamer & Brendonck, 1997; Wishart & Day, 2002). Er wordt verondersteld dat de kenmerken van deze habitatten in belangrijke mate worden bepaald door de lokale klimatologische condities en de dynamiek van het grondwater (Table Moutain Group (TMG-) aquifer) in de regio (Xu & Beekman, 2003). Naar aanleiding van de acute watercrisis in Zuid-Afrika werd deze TMG-aquifer reeds 30 jaar geleden aangeduid als een potentiële bulk voor watervoorziening in de Kaapstreek (Pietersen & Parsons, 2002). De gevolgen van de massale abstractie van grondwater voor de oppervlaktewater ecosystemen is echter niet gekend en vormt potentieel een grote bedreiging voor de integriteit van de wetlands in de regio. Kennis van structuur en functie van de gemeenschappen in tijdelijke wetlands en impact van de veranderende hydrologische condities hierop worden daarom beschouwd als een topprioriteit teneinde maatregelen te implementeren voor het duurzaam gebruik van grond- en oppervlaktewater zoals bepaald in de “Water Act” van 1998 (MacKay & Grobler, 2003).   Doelstellingen Met behulp van teledetectie zullen eerst verschillende types wetlands worden gekarakteriseerd als basis voor de studie van hun hydrologie en ecologie. Op basis van een digitaal terreinmodel en een hydrologisch model zullen vervolgens de run-off en de dynamiek van het grondwater worden bepaald. De door de teledetectie geidentificeerde wetlands zullen gebruikt worden om het model te calibreren. Aan de hand van de studie van de diversiteitspatronen van belangrijke vertegenwoordigers (planten en invertebraten) van tijdelijke wetlands in de Westelijke Kaapregio (Zuid-Afrika) in relatie tot de hydrologie van deze habitatten, is het uiteindelijk de bedoeling de associatie te bestuderen tussen patronen van diversiteit en voorkomen van soorten enerzijds en hydrologie-gerelateerde variabelen anderzijds. Samen met de kwantitatief genetische studie van levensgeschiedeniskenmerken van geselecteerde vlaggenschipsoorten (grote branchiopoden) zal ons dit in staat stellen de evolutionaire flexibiliteit te bestuderen van soorten onder tijdsdruk en mogelijke veranderingen in diversiteit en verspreiding van soorten in te schatten volgens verschillende scenario’s van hydrologische veranderingen.
