This diversity will be compared to the wild\r\npopulations to estimate their genetic ‘health’.","AbstractOtherLang":"Het Kaaps zeepaardje komt maar in drie estuaria in Zuid-Afrika voor en dan nog in relatief\r\nkleine aantallen. Zijn voortbestaan wordt bedreigd door menselijke activiteiten en vervuiling van\r\nhet habitat. Sinds eind 2003 worden de conservatie activiteiten gecoördineerd door Blijdorp Zoo in\r\nRotterdam, binnen een project met de naam Hica. Dit project loopt nog tot eind 2005.\r\nWetenschappelijk onderzoek kan bijdragen aan zowel het beheer en het succes van het\r\nkweekprogramma ex situ als leiden tot een beter inzicht in de situatie van de wilde soortgenoten.\r\nZoo Antwerpen is één de weinige aquariums die zeer succesvol kweken met de soort en de KMDA\r\nvervult dus een belangrijke rol binnen het kweekprogramma. Vanuit dit oogpunt vroeg men de\r\nKMDA partner te worden in het project en specifiek onze expertise in het beheren van\r\nkweekprogramma’s en in het DNA-onderzoek ter beschikking te stellen. Via DNA analyse,\r\nuitgevoerd in het CRC labo, willen we te weten komen hoe het gesteld is met de genetische\r\ngezondheid (diversiteit) van onze kweek en hoe de wilde populaties zich tot elkaar verhouden. In\r\n2004 werd hiervoor een samenwerking aangegaan met het labo Aquatische Ecologie van de\r\nKULeuven voor de ontwikkeling van specifieke genetische merkers voor het Kaaps Zeepaardje.\r\nDeze samenwerking resulteerde in 16 polymorfe merkers tot nu toe.
