In OMES the further development an existing ecosystem-model (MOSES) of the Sea Scheldt is the priority. In the OMES project already a lot of chemical, biological and ecological data were gathered to improve the knowledge of the ecosystem of the Scheldt estuarine. To increase insight, experimental project were established at Kruibeke and Lippenbroek to monitor and simulate environmental conditions in controlled flooding area's. An integrated and coordinated monitoringsprogram is nevertheless necessary to develop further future research on the functioning of the estuarine ecosystem of the Scheldt. \r\n\r\nThe 4th phase of OMES continues the monitoring of the different ecosystem components, but will give more attention to the possible role of flooding areas that can be used as protection strategy against floods, especially to the high value of these areas as ecological important habitats. \r\n\r\nThe following studies, concerning the different components of the estuarine ecosystem, will be executed: \r\n\r\n<i>Fourth phase, 2006-2007 </i>\r\n<ol type=disc>\r\n<li>The basic water quality in the Flemish part of the Scheldt estuary\r\n<li>The C cycle of the Flemish part of the Scheldt estuary\r\n<li>Primary production in the Flemish part of the Scheldt estuary \r\n<li>Sedimentology of the Flemish part of the Scheldt estuary \r\n<li>The phytoplankton of the Flemish part of the Scheldt estuary  \r\n<li>The zoöplankton of the Flemish part of the Scheldt estuary \r\n<li>Study on the vegetation under tidal range in the Flemish part of the Scheldt estuary: 2 mesocosmos experiments and experimental area Lippenbroek details 'presentation' \r\n<li>Evaluation and update of the OMES database, concerning the data of the Flemish part of the Scheldt estuary details \r\n</li></ol type=disc>","AbstractOtherLang":"Een ecosysteem-model is een instrument waarmee beleidsopties kunnen worden getoetst naar hun impact op het ecologisch functioneren. Binnen OMES is de uitbreiding van een bestaand ecosysteem-model (MOSES) over de hele Zeeschelde als prioriteit vastgelegd om zo wetenschappelijke steun te geven binnen het waterbeheer van de Schelde. In het OMES project werden reeds veel chemische, biologische en ecologische data verzameld om de kennis rond het estuariene ecosysteem van de Schelde te verruimen. Om nog meer inzicht te krijgen werden proefprojecten gestart ter hoogte van Kruibeke en Lippenbroek, waar de omstandigheden in een gecontroleerd overstromingsgebied (GOG) gesimuleerd of opgevolgd worden. Toch blijft een geïntegreerd en gecoördineerd monitoringsprogramma van de juiste parameters zeker noodzakelijk om toekomstig onderzoek naar het functioneren van het estuarien ecosytsteem van de Schelde te ondersteunen. \r\n\r\nDe 4de fase binnen het OMES project zet dan ook de monitoring van de ecosysteemcomponenten van fase 3 verder, maar richt zich eveneens op de mogelijke rol van gecontroleerde overstromingsgebieden als beschermingsstrategie tegen overstroming, rekening houdend met het ecologisch belang van het estuariene milieu.
