{"projectrec":{"ProID":2549,"StandardTitle":"Maritime transport co-ordination platform","OrigTitle":null,"Acronym":"MTCP","AbstractEnglish":"The Maritime Transport Coordination Platform (MTCP) is a platform funded through the Sixth Framework Programme. It was created in response to the Directorate General Energy and Transport’s (DG TREN) call for Sustainable Surface Transport, SUSTDEV-2002-3.3.1.3.12. \r\n\r\nThe technical objectives of the platform are to produce high quality, policy relevant, reports, specifications, forecasts, standard methodologies, decision support tools and information products. The MTCP started in April 2004 and will run for 3 years. \r\n\r\nThe MTCP addresses the need to enhance the relevance of Europe’s maritime research and education to matters of maritime policy related to sustainable surface transport, European competitiveness and safe, secure and efficient operation of maritime transport. \r\n\r\nThe concept of the platform is a managed activity supported by a wide range of European organisations. The activities and the membership (twenty-two MTCP partners) have both fixed elements for continuity and flexible adaptive parts in order to respond to very short term requirements and changing policy imperatives over the life of the coordination action. \r\n\r\nSeven expert groups will provide coverage on all aspects of the maritime transport domain. The expert groups will review developments, provide forecasts for their area and recommend areas that need deeper study in support of policy development or policy effectiveness. \r\n\r\nAround fifteen policy support studies will be undertaken during the 3 years of the MTCP. These studies will support the Commission’s declared maritime transport priorities for the next decade. These studies fall into the categories of, \r\n\r\nThe MTCP will develop a Maritime Transport Sector Observatory (MTSO) to provide access to knowledge and data. This will be an integrating resource that will allow better use to be made of EU, national and other investments in data, information, research results and technical developments. Associated with the MTSO services is the provision of experts for short-term support to DG TREN. \r\n\r\nThe MTCP through its expert group approach brings an unparalleled body of expertise and knowledge to the challenge of maritime transport policy support.
