This discrepancy is due to different available metal concentrations in soil. But also changes in soil microbial populations can change the measured response in field contaminated soils. The combination of both different available metal concentrations and changes in microbial population (adaptation or acclimatization) can explain the absence of toxic effects in the field. The aim of this investigation is to identify the role of both processes. Nitrification is chosen as microbial process and Zn as contaminant. Finally, this should result in a better extrapolation of short-term laboratory tests to long-term field contaminations.","AbstractOtherLang":"In snelle laboratoriumtesten worden vaak effecten van toxische stoffen in de bodem vastgesteld. Maar over de veldrelevantie van deze testen bestaan grote twijfels: laboratoriumtesten suggereren vaak een grote gevoeligheid van microbiële processen voor zware metalen, terwijl deze bevindingen niet worden teruggevonden in veldsituaties bij dezelfde totale metaalconcentraties. Als oorzaak wordt vaak het verschil in biologisch beschikbare metaalconcentratie aangehaald. Maar er kan ook een aanpassing van de microbiële populatie in het veld aan de verhoogde metaalconcentraties optreden. De afwezigheid van toxische effecten in het veld kan dus veroorzaakt worden door een ongekende combinatie van beide factoren. Dit project heeft als doel om in microbiële toxiciteitstesten de factor biologische beschikbaarheid van de contaminant te onderscheiden van de factor populatieadaptatie/acclimatisatie. Nitrificatie wordt verkozen als microbieel proces en Zn als contaminant.
