Six sites in the Scheldt estuary, chosen as a function of bottom characteristics and salinity gradient, are studied seasonally.\r\n\r\nEarlier research programmes about the behaviour of trace metals in the Scheldt improved our knowledge in that field, but let still many unknowns. One of them is what will be the forthcoming dissolved metal contents in the Scheldt. Firstly, it is very uncertain how the large amounts of metals, stored in the sediment, will react in future. Secondly, the dissolved metal concentrations are depending on a (large) number of waterquality variables such as pH, O2, Cl, DOC, turbidity etc....Through the influence of the planned sanitation of BOD discharges, the waterquality variables will be (stongly) modified in future. This leads to the proposed research on the buffering activity of the metals stored in the aquatic sediments, and the Inf'luence of the planned BOD reduction on the metal concentrations.\r\n\r\nThe former Institute for Nature Conservation was a partner in this project","AbstractOtherLang":"Metalen in Scheldesedimenten:\r\n\r\nHet onderzoek situeert zich in het kader van het beleidsplan Westerschelde. Randvoorwaarde voor het zich kunnen ontwikkelen van de natuur-, visserij- en recreatiefunctie is dat de verontreiniging van water en bodem wordt teruggedrongen. De verontreiniging van het Schelde-estuarium is echter van complexe aard en omvat zowel organisch materiaal, nutriënten, zware metalen, radioactieve stoffen als organische microverontreinigingen. Onderhavig projektvoorstel heeft slechts betrekking op een (klein) deel van dit complexe mengsel en wel op een (deel) van de zware metalen . Het projektvoorstel richt zich daarbij op: I.De huidige en toekomstige metaalgehalten (vooral het opgelost gehalte omdat dat de biologisch beschikbare fraktie is) in het Schelde-estuarium. 2.De (bufferende) rol van het bodemsediment. Als de lozingen van metalen gaan verminderen, zal het bodemsediment, voor een ongewijzigde waterkwaliteit, nog steeds naleveren. 3. De invloed van een toekomstige BOD sanering, omdat hierdoor de waterkwaliteit zal veranderen, en dus ook de nalevering van metalen uit het bodemsediment. Dit alles wordt thevens bekeken in het kader van de Noordzee Ministerconferentie afgesproken emissiereduktie.  Een onbekende over het gedrag van zware metalen in de Schelde is wat het toekomstige opgeloste metaalgehalte in de Schelde zal zijn. In de eerste plaats is het nog onzeker hoe de zeer grote hoeveelheden metaal, die in het sediment zijn opgeslagen in de toekomst zullen reageren. In de tweede plaats is het opgeloste metaalgehalte afhankelijk van een (groot) aantal waterkwaliteitsvariabelen zoals pH, O2' Cl, DOC turbiditeit etc....
